Built by the community, for the community
In the early 1990s, BART planned to pave this corner with a five-story parking garage. The Fruitvale pushed back. Led by The Unity Council, neighbors filled community meetings and design forums and called for something better: not a place to park and leave, but a place to arrive, gather, and belong.
Out of that organizing came Fruitvale Transit Village, opened in 2004 and now a national model for community-driven, transit-oriented development. Local shops, a health clinic, a library, a senior center, child care, and homes, all built around the needs of the neighborhood, steps from the BART. Two decades later, it is still a place the community built for itself.
